Data aparitiei: 27.09.2010 The Government’s official procedures for a new nuclear plant are illegal

The Government representatives decided to build a new nuclear plant in Romania. Although the Aarhus Convention, to which our country has been party since 2000, foresees the existence of the public information and consultation in this regard, before taking any decision, the officials in the Ministry of the Economy came to the decision to hide all information related to this topic. . Some funds have been already allocated and a study has been conducted, indicating 102 possible places, in order to choose the location of the new nuclear plant.
As these formalities are illegal, Greenpeace and the Centre for Legal Resources (CLR) have submitted an official complaint to the Aarhus Commission, asking for further investigations. The complaint comprises the notice that in 2007 the Government approved the Romania’s Energy Strategy, also without public consultation, as it is set out in the legislation. Following the requests submitted to the Economy Ministry by Greenpeace and CLR, on the public consultations carried out, according to the legislation, the Ministry decided to start the public consultation.
