At the initiative of PNL leaders, the Romanian Parliament has forgotten its international and national obligations and dealt a blow to gender equality in Romania.
The declaration was promoted by Senate President, Alina Gorghiu, and under pressure from PNL leaders such as Ben Oni Ardelean and Robert Sighiartău the declaration was amended and adopted with 235 votes in favour, 24 against and 5 abstentions; 3 MEPs did not vote.
It is absolutely disgraceful that the Romanian Parliament validates a speech that contains denigrating statements towards women, the LGBTQ+ community, and not only, by amending the adopted declaration.
If PNL has gone from being a liberal party to an ultra-conservative one, we call for an official statement in this regard so that we, the public, can be fully informed. We would also like to know whether Parliament intends to continue such a policy.
